The Commodore's Cup

By the middle of our first season, 1969, LSSC membership had grown enough to support a complete racing program, and it was unanimously felt that additions to the regular Sunday races in the fashion of a long distance and a night race were desirable and would be enthusiastically received. Ultimately, these two criteria were incorporated into one race, which was called the Commodore's Cup.

Our commodore that first season, John McGuire, and our secretary, Dorothy McGuire, donated the prize, a treasured antique silver sugar bowl, which was to become our Commodore's Cup. It was decided to hold this event in the fall in anticipation of good winds and an exciting race. Indeed this has proven to be the case, as all those who have participated can testify. Most have been our local version of real "gear busters", combined with the drama and excitement attendant to night races. The race has traditionally been run on the second weekend in September, only recently with due consideration to a full moon.

In 2005 the Cup was dedicated to the memory of our Founding Father and his Lady, John and Dorothy McGuire.
