Junior Race Challenge Cup
In the summer of 1975, Eric Petersen asked his father, "Why don't we have a junior's race comparable to the Petticoat Regatta?" Since his father, Pete, was a member of the race committee, he proposed the idea at the next race committee meeting. After the guidelines were established by the race committee and approved by the Commodore and Board of Directors, the first Junior's race was scheduled on an alternate Sunday Race day on September 25, 1975. Greeted with great enthusiasm by the LSSC Juniors, the race has now become an annual event. In 1977, we were shocked by the tragic death of one of our younger members, Cheryl McCartney. In Cheryl's memory, her father John presented LSSC with a perpetual challenge cup to be competed for by Lake Shore junior sailors..
